The history of st.Hubertus

The music society St.Hubertus was founded by Dean Verkuyl on the 31st of May 1931 as a "harmony band" (composed of brass players, woodwinds and percussion). This clergyman’s influence within the social clubs in Herpen was substantial.

Dean Verkuyl gave music lessons until he was quite elderly and was also the conductor of the St. Hubertus band. Later on, the band was directed by rector Verhoof. The society was named after the second patron saint of the parish of Herpen. Around 1950 the band was  changed into a "fanfare band" (similar to a brass band, but with more emphasis on the buglers)

In 1961 the music society was expanded again to include a drum band, which blossomed under the inspirational leadership of Nelly van Mook. Just over 10 years ago the drum band expanded further to include a large number of melodic percussion instruments, which called for a change to the repertoire. Which is why it is now referred to as a percussion group.

In the nineteen seventies, during the period that Mr. Jo Hendriks was chairman and Mr. H. Nijenhof (from Millingen a.d. Rijn) conductor, the society’s music was changed for the second time. The band became a brass band, with a typical brass sound. This has a significant advantage, because a complete complement for a brass band requires fewer musicians.

It was conductor Mr. Harry Godtschalk who in the nineteen eighties and halfway nineties worked out the brassband sound even more and in this period the band made a promotion to the (Dutch) 1th division. He managed to  bring over his enthusiasm and love for the brassband sound to the musicians

Since 1963 the music society has also had the Bonlander Hofkapel in its ranks. This band plays regularly at various festivities, which naturally includes carnival celebrations. The band’s great reputation for performing at festivals reaches far and wide. The Bonlander Hofkapel celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2003.
